What Is a Derby Jacket?ダービージャケットとは

On this page, a derby jacket means a short, blouson-style jacket with a rib-knit collar and cuffs and a front zipper. TOWNCRAFT's three styles also have a seam line running from the chest to the shoulders and slanted pockets on the left and right at the waist.

In the United States, the jackets of Derby of San Francisco, a company founded in 1963, were made as durable, practical outerwear for working people (according to the company's website). In an article dated June 6, 2021, the local newspaper SF Examiner described the jacket as a San Francisco–made bomber-style jacket chosen by young working people in neighborhoods across the city, such as Bayview, the Mission and the Sunset.

The TOWNCRAFT derby jackets carried in the official online store are the following three styles. On all three, the pattern of the shoulder panels has been adjusted to give a cleaner line when worn. The front zipper on all three is made by IDEAL, a U.S. company founded in 1936.

Design Features: Five Points Seen in the Product Photosデザインの特徴——商品写真で見る5つの点

Here is a summary of the construction shared by the three styles and the differences between them.

3型に共通する作りと、型ごとの違いをまとめます。

1. Collar: rib-knit stand collar1. 襟：リブ編みの立ち襟

The collar is rib-knit and stands up in a rounded shape, and it is the same on all three styles. On the PIGMENT DYE DERBY JACKET, the ribbing on the collar and cuffs is black in all three colors, so on OLIVE and GRAY it contrasts clearly with the body color.

襟は丸く立ち上がるリブ編みで、3型とも同じ形です。PIGMENT DYE DERBY JACKET は3色とも襟と袖口のリブが黒で、OLIVE と GRAY では身頃の色との差がはっきり出ます。

2. Front: a placket that hides the zipper, and buttons at the top and bottom2. 前：ファスナーを隠す前立てと、上下のボタン

The front zipper is covered by a placket in the same fabric as the body (leather on the LEATHER), so it is hardly visible from the front. There is one button just below the collar (at the top of the placket) and two on the hem band.

前のファスナーは、身頃と同じ生地（LEATHER は革）の前立てに覆われ、正面からはほとんど見えません。襟のすぐ下（前立ての上端）に1つ、裾の帯に2つ、ボタンが付いています。

3. Shoulders: a seam line running from the chest to the upper arms3. 肩：胸から二の腕へ続く切り替え線

A seam line crosses the upper chest in an arc and continues onto the upper arms. There are also seams running diagonally down from the neckline to the shoulders, and the shoulder area is made up of several pieces of fabric. Multiple parallel rows of stitching run along the seam line, and on the PIGMENT DYE DERBY JACKET the fine decorative stitching looks like a band.

胸の上を弧を描くように横切る切り替え線が、そのまま二の腕の上まで続きます。襟ぐりから肩へ斜めに下りる縫い目もあり、肩まわりはいくつかの布を組み合わせた作りです。切り替え線には何本ものステッチが平行に入り、PIGMENT DYE DERBY JACKET では細かい飾り縫いが帯のように見えます。

4. Pockets: slanted openings on the left and right at the waist4. ポケット：腰の左右に斜めの切り込み

There are slanted slit pockets on the left and right at the waist. The PADDED SHORT and PIGMENT DYE have zippers with small ring pulls. The LEATHER has slit pockets without zippers.

腰の左右に、斜めに切り込んだポケットがあります。PADDED SHORT と PIGMENT DYE はファスナー付きで、引き手は小さなリングです。LEATHER はファスナーの無い切り込みポケットです。

5. Cuffs and hem5. 袖口と裾

The cuffs are gathered with rib knit. On the PADDED SHORT and PIGMENT DYE, the front of the hem is a band in the same fabric as the body, with ribbing at both sides. On the LEATHER, the band at the front of the hem is also leather.

袖口はリブ編みで絞られています。裾は、PADDED SHORT と PIGMENT DYE では前側が身頃と同じ生地の帯で、両脇にリブが入ります。LEATHER は裾の前側の帯も革です。

Choosing Your Size: How to Compare Measurementsサイズの選び方——実寸の比べ方

The reliable way to choose a size is to compare the measurements on the product page with the measurements of a jacket you own, laid flat. The tables below show the measurements of the PADDED SHORT and PIGMENT DYE (as listed on the product pages as of October 5, 2026). The measurements of the LEATHER DERBY JACKET are listed on its product page.

What the numbers show数字から分かること

Size for size, the PADDED SHORT is about 4.5 cm wider in the chest than the PIGMENT DYE (approx. 67 cm vs. approx. 62.5 cm in M, and approx. 68.5 cm vs. approx. 64 cm in L), about 1.5–2 cm longer in body length, and about 1–2 cm longer in sleeve length.

同じサイズ表記で比べると、PADDED SHORT は PIGMENT DYE より身幅が約4.5cm広く（M は約67cm と約62.5cm、L は約68.5cm と約64cm）、着丈は約1.5〜2cm、裄丈は約1〜2cm長くなっています。

On the PADDED SHORT and PIGMENT DYE, going up one size increases the chest width by about 1.5 cm, the body length by about 3–3.5 cm and the sleeve length by about 2–3 cm. When you go up a size, the body length and sleeve length change more than the chest width does.

PADDED SHORT と PIGMENT DYE では、サイズを1つ上げると、身幅が約1.5cm、着丈が約3〜3.5cm、裄丈が約2〜3cm増えます。サイズを上げると、身幅よりも着丈と袖の長さのほうが大きく変わります。

Measuring a jacket you own手持ちのアウターで測る

This is a general way to measure. Results may vary slightly depending on how you measure, and the actual garment may differ slightly from the sizing shown.

一般的な測り方です。測り方によって多少の差が出るほか、表示のサイズ感と実物が若干異なる場合があります。

1. Close the zipper and buttons of your jacket and lay it on a flat surface. Lay the ribbing flat without stretching it.手持ちのアウターのファスナーとボタンを閉じ、平らな場所に置きます。リブは伸ばさずに置きます。
2. Body length: measure straight from the center of the base of the collar at the back to the edge of the hem.着丈：後ろの襟の付け根の中心から、裾の端までをまっすぐ測ります。
3. Chest width: measure straight across from one underarm edge to the other.身幅：左右の脇の下の端から端までを、まっすぐ測ります。
4. Sleeve length: measure from the center of the base of the collar at the back, over the shoulder, to the edge of the cuff.裄丈：後ろの襟の付け根の中心から、肩を通って袖口の端までを測ります。
5. Compare your measurements with the tables above.測った数字を上の表と比べます。

When layering重ね着をするとき

If you have a jacket that you wear over a heavy knit or sweatshirt, compare with its measurements. Note, however, that as the tables above show, on the PADDED SHORT and PIGMENT DYE going up one size adds only about 1.5 cm to the chest width, while the body length and sleeve length become about 2–3.5 cm longer. If room in the chest is your priority, also check how much the body length and sleeve length increase.

Here are the ways TOWNCRAFT suggests wearing each style, based on length, material and whether it is padded.

丈・素材・中綿の有無から、TOWNCRAFT が考える合わせ方です。

PIGMENT DYE DERBY JACKET

The shell is lightweight cotton weather cloth. It is suited to throwing on lightly over a T-shirt or shirt.

表地はライトウェイトのコットンウェザーです。Tシャツやシャツの上に軽く羽織る使い方に向いています。

PADDED SHORT DERBY JACKET

It is padded with Thermolite® and also designed with warmth in mind. In cold weather, it can be worn as outerwear over a knit or sweatshirt. When layering, compare its chest width with a jacket you own, as described in "When layering" above.

中綿（サーモライト®）入りで、保温性も考えた仕様です。寒い時期に、ニットやスウェットの上に着る外着として使えます。重ね着をするときは、上の「重ね着をするとき」のとおり、身幅を手持ちのアウターと比べてください。

LEATHER DERBY JACKET

The shell is sheep leather and the lining is polyester satin. The lining lets it slide on smoothly, making it easy to wear over a variety of inner layers. It can be layered over a shirt or knit.

表地は羊革、裏地はポリエステルサテンです。裏地で滑りを良くし、いろいろなインナーを着やすくしています。シャツやニットの上に重ねて着られます。

Layering with an ombre shirtオンブレシャツと重ねる
