What is an ombre shirt?
A shaded check born in 1950s America
An ombre shirt is a check shirt woven with shades of colored yarn arranged step by step to create shading (a gradation); there are also shirts that show the same pattern in print. Ombre is the name of a pattern and flannel is the name of a fabric, so there are also ombre shirts made of flannel. TOWNCRAFT offers current (new) shirts based on vintage pieces (the archive) from the 1950s–60s on its official online store.
Anyone who loves vintage clothing has picked up an ombre check at least once. TOWNCRAFT was one of the brands that brought this pattern into the world in 1950s America. TOWNCRAFT Official explains everything from the origin of the word to dating vintage pieces and choosing current shirts.
01 — Definition
What is an ombre check? Origin of the word and definition
Ombré is a French word meaning “shaded” or “blurred.” As a shirt pattern, the ombre check refers to a check in which shades of colored yarn are arranged step by step so that the weave itself creates the gradation. The shading is not reproduced in print; the order of the yarns creates it, and that is where this pattern's refinement lies.
OmbréFrench for “shaded.” It has also been called shadow plaid in English-speaking countries, and by a Japanese name meaning “shadow check” in Japan's vintage clothing scene. All of these words refer to the same family of patterns.
Ombre shirts are often confused with “flannel shirts,” but the difference lies in what each word names. Ombre is the name of a pattern; flannel is the name of a fabric. So there are also ombre shirts in flannel. Even so, what symbolized TOWNCRAFT in the 1950s was the ombre open-collar shirt in cotton and rayon, with a fluid drape and a subtle sheen.

03 — Details
Details to look at: the loop collar and rayon
Loop collar (open collar)
At the collar of an ombre shirt there is a small “loop” that hooks over the top button. Worn open, the collar looks relaxed; with the loop fastened and the collar closed, it looks neat. One collar with two faces: that is the appeal of the loop collar.
Cotton × rayon
What characterizes 1950s ombre is a fabric of cotton blended with rayon. The fluid softness and subtle sheen particular to rayon, and a drape that follows the body, give it an allure that an ordinary check shirt does not have. The shading of the gradation is complete only when it comes together with the way this fabric falls.
MACHINE WASHABLE
The words “MACHINE WASHABLE,” often seen on tags of the period, were a selling point that reflected the mood of a time when home washing machines were spreading. Practicality as everyday wear together with a beautiful pattern: that is why TOWNCRAFT's ombre was loved.
04 — Vintage
The vintage market and how to tell the era
TOWNCRAFT ombre shirts from the '50s–'60s are still highly popular in the vintage clothing market, and pieces in good condition get harder to find every year. To tell the era, start with these three points.
① Tag wording: the wording and typesetting of the tag, such as a logo bearing the seller's company name, change by era (→ Tag dating guide). ② Collar shape: the loop collar (open collar) was at its height in the '50s; the button-down rose from the '60s on. ③ Fabric labeling: rayon-blend labeling and the format of the care label are also clues.

For the reproduction, we started by collecting original pieces from the period. The number of yarn colors, the order of the colors, the density of the weave: an ombre gradation cannot be reproduced from reference photos. The fabric of the rayon 100% ombre shirts, such as the 60S OMBRE LOOP COLLAR S/S SHIRTS, is woven in Mitsuke, a production area for yarn-dyed fabric, based on the archive from the period.
These shirts are made in a boxy silhouette, based on the XL size of the period with the sleeve length, body length and sleeve-attachment angle adjusted. The seams at the armholes, under the sleeves and at the sides are all flat-felled.

06 — Vintage & Current
How vintage and current shirts differ
Vintage shirts are the actual TOWNCRAFT shirts sold in America at the time, and they now circulate as secondhand clothing. Current shirts are new pieces being made today based on that archive. What this page calls “reproduction” also means these current shirts. Even when the patterns look alike, where you get them, the fabrics and the approach to sizing are different.

Choosing by collar and pockets
The rayon short-sleeve and the wool style, which have LOOP COLLAR in their product names, have an open loop collar. The rayon short-sleeve and the cotton printed flannel have a small collar and a rounded chest pocket. The wool style has two chest pockets with rounded flaps, and the product description says it re-creates the details of a '50s open-collar shirt.

Choosing by silhouette and size
All three styles have a boxy silhouette based on the XL size of the period, with the sleeve length, body length and sleeve-attachment angle adjusted. Sizes: the rayon short-sleeve comes in S, M and L; the cotton printed flannel in M, L and XL; and the wool style in M and L. Body length, chest width, shoulder width and sleeve length for each size are on the product pages.
The standard differs from the labeled sizes of vintage shirts, so compare actual measurements rather than labels. Lay a shirt you own flat, measure the same points, and put the numbers next to those on the product page; this makes the difference easier to see.
